After inventing New Orleans, the great nineteenth century travelogue writer Lafcadio Hearn spent the final decades of his life as an emigre in Japan where he married a Samurai’s daughter and took a Japanese name. He was overtly fascinated with traditional Japanese culture and he very soon started collecting Japanese folk lore stories, mainly on ghosts. Some of those stories are collected in the present volume giving the reader a glimpse at what Hearn had found: as his texts were written on the turn of the 19th and the 20th century, he was witnessing the rapid modernization of Japanese society and therefore building a monument to a culture that was disappearing in front of his eyes. The stories on ghosts, phantoms, magical items and souls of the dead are therefore intertwined with a fine nostalgic narration in the first person singular, containing ethnographic as well as philosophical reflections. Hearn’s writings on Japan are such rich texts that they are studied as sources on Japanese culture in Japanese schools, and they are an indispensable lecture for all those enamored with the Far East.
